Sony Pictures Entertainment provided a first look at the upcoming Resident Evil live-action reboot during the latest State of Play livestream. The newly released clip introduces viewers to Austin Abrams in the role of Bryan, offering a glimpse into the tone of this latest adaptation. Directed by Zach Cregger, the project is being produced by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions with a focus on returning the series to its survival horror roots.
The film features a supporting cast including Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Behind the scenes, the screenplay was penned by Cregger and Shay Hatten, with cinematography handled by Dariusz Wolski. The production team aims for a faithful interpretation of the source material, a departure from previous iterations of the film franchise.
This reboot arrives as the eighth live-action entry in the series, following the 2021 release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. While the live-action films have a long history dating back to 2002, the franchise has also seen success in the CG animation space, most recently with 2023's Resident Evil: Death Island. With the 1996 original game recently inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame and the latest entry, Resident Evil: Requiem, reaching 6 million units sold, the property remains a significant pillar for both Capcom and its film partners.
