Sony Pictures Entertainment has unveiled the first official trailer for its upcoming Resident Evil live-action reboot. The footage introduces Austin Abrams in the role of Bryan, offering a glimpse into a production that aims to pivot away from the action-heavy tone of previous entries and lean into the series' original survival horror DNA.
Directed by Zach Cregger, known for his work on Barbarian, the film features a screenplay co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. The ensemble cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Behind the scenes, the project is a collaborative effort between Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions, with Dariusz Wolski serving as director of photography.
This project marks the eighth live-action installment in the long-running franchise. It follows the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which attempted a similar back-to-basics approach. With the success of the recent Resident Evil requiem game—which recently surpassed 6 million units sold—the studio is clearly betting that audiences are ready for another cinematic interpretation of the survival horror classic.
The film is scheduled to arrive in North American theaters on September 18, followed by a Japanese release on October 9.
