The Kochikame franchise is making a major comeback to celebrate its 50th anniversary. A livestream event held this Saturday confirmed that a new anime adaptation, titled Shin Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, is currently in production for a 2027 debut. The series will air on Fuji TV and is slated for wide streaming availability.
Studio Gallop is handling the production, with Akitarō Daichi (Me & Roboco) serving as director. The creative team also includes scriptwriters Shuichi Kamiyama and Yoshifumi Fukushima, with Kenichi Hara and Gil-Bo Noh overseeing character design and animation direction. Toshihiko Sahashi, known for his work on Full Metal Panic!, has been tapped to compose the score. The newly revealed cast features Fukushi Ochiai as the iconic Kankichi Ryōtsu, joined by Shōta Aoi as Keiichi Nakagawa, M.A.O as Reiko Akimoto, and Raikō Sakamoto as Daijirō Ōhara.
Beyond the screen, the franchise is expanding into gaming with the upcoming title Kochikame: Ryo-san's Billion-yen Beat. Developed by Shueisha Games and Kairosoft, this simulation game will launch across major consoles, mobile devices, and PC. The Steam version is confirmed to include English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese language support.
This announcement arrives as the franchise continues to see renewed international interest. While the original 1996 television series ran for over 300 episodes, it remained largely unavailable in North America until REMOW began releasing the series with English subtitles on YouTube in 2025. With the original manga having concluded its 40-year run in 2016, this 2027 project serves as a significant milestone for a series that remains a staple of Japanese comedy.
