The latest television adaptation of The Ghost in the Shell, currently airing from studio Science SARU, delivered a deep-cut surprise in its fifth episode this week. The production confirmed the return of the Puma sisters, crossover characters pulled directly from Masamune Shirow’s Dominion Tank Police. The roles are reprised by Aya Hisakawa, who voices Annapuma, and Niina Kumagaya, who steps into the role of Unipuma.
To commemorate the cameo, the production team released a special end card for the fifth episode, illustrated by acclaimed director and animator Mahiro Maeda, known for his work on the Evangelion rebuild films. This crossover highlights the shared creative DNA of Masamune Shirow's body of work, further expanding the interconnected feel of this new take on the cyberpunk classic.
Directed by Mokochan, the series explores a fresh vision for Section 9, featuring Maaya Sakamoto as Motoko Kusanagi. The production has maintained a high profile since its global premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with a simultaneous streaming rollout on Amazon Prime Video in over 240 countries and regions. The show continues to air as part of the "Ka-Anival!!" programming block on Kansai TV and Fuji TV.
