The conclusion to the Mononoke film trilogy, Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent (Gekijōban Mononoke Dai-San-Shō: Hebigami), is set to make its global debut on Netflix on September 29. This release follows the film's theatrical run in Japan, which began earlier this year in May.
This trilogy serves as a distinct evolution for the franchise, featuring a different iteration of the iconic Medicine Seller, now voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya. The transition in voice talent followed a high-profile production shift in 2023, during which the original lead was replaced. The third film's release also sparked significant discourse after a surprise cameo appearance by the original Medicine Seller, a move that prompted an apology from producer Kōji Yamamoto regarding the transparency of the casting choices.
As the trilogy wraps up, the Mononoke universe is already looking toward its next iteration. A new project centered on a third Medicine Seller, titled Ken no Tsurugi, is currently in development. Hirofumi Araki, who portrayed the character in the franchise’s recent stage play adaptations, is set to provide the voice for this new incarnation, signaling a continued expansion of the series' unique supernatural aesthetic.
