Netflix and Sega have unveiled a major expansion of their partnership, announcing three new screen adaptations based on the publisher's gaming catalog. The slate includes a live-action comedy film based on the high-octane Crazy Taxi series, a live-action crime film inspired by the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven title, and a new animated series centered on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

For the Crazy Taxi adaptation, screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand—known for their work on Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers—have been tapped to pen the script. The production team features heavy hitters from the existing Sonic film franchise, including producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, working alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara. Nakahara is also confirmed to produce the Stranger Than Heaven film, which is being developed in collaboration with Ryu ga Gotoku Studio.

The new Sonic the Hedgehog animated project marks a shift in tone for the franchise on the platform, with Carlos Stevens attached as a producer. This iteration is specifically being developed for an upper preschool audience, distinguishing it from the more mature-leaning Sonic Prime series that previously found a home on Netflix.

Why it matters: This announcement signals a deeper integration of Sega’s intellectual property into Netflix’s streaming library, though it remains to be seen how the Stranger Than Heaven film will align with the game's January 15 launch. With Crazy Taxi: World Tour also slated for a 2027 release, Sega is clearly positioning its legacy titles for a multi-platform resurgence.
