The survival-horror series Online: The Comic has reached its conclusion, with the 255th and final chapter arriving on the MangaBox platform on August 14. Artist Midori Amagaeru commemorated the end of the long-running adaptation with a celebratory illustration shared on social media, marking the end of a project that began over a decade ago.
First launching on DeNA's MangaBox app in 2013, the series gained recognition for its high-stakes premise involving a lethal game known as "Nightmare." The story follows 22-year-old office worker Mai Yashiro, who is forced into a deadly competition where losing matches results in physical trauma and refusing to play spells disaster for her loved ones. The narrative expands as Mai joins a specialized strategy team tasked with dismantling the mysterious game from within.
While the manga version has now concluded, the franchise's roots remain active. The original novel series, which debuted in 2011 and boasts over 40 million online hits, saw its 27th volume released by Kadokawa as recently as May 2024. The manga adaptation itself saw a lengthy release schedule, eventually spanning 23 compiled volumes despite earlier industry listings that suggested an earlier conclusion.
