The stage musical adaptation of Moyoco Anno's Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen manga is slated to premiere off-Broadway in New York City this fall. The production will take place at The Night Egg, a new Manhattan theater named after a location from the source material.
Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Rob Ashford, known for his work on "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Frozen," is helming the musical. The music and lyrics are being composed by Duncan Sheik, who previously worked on "Spring Awakening," with Leah Nanako Winkler penning the script. Or Matias will serve as music director.
Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen originally serialized in Shodensha's Feel Young magazine from 2013 to 2018, with its two volumes later honored at the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2020. This production marks the first original English-language musical based on a Japanese manga. The project has previously held private industry presentations and is aiming for a worldwide release. Anno is also known for works like "Sakuran" and "Sugar Sugar Rune.
