Kadokawa has provided a clearer look at its upcoming Marvel Comics collaboration, releasing fresh concept art and narrative premises for its new manga projects. The Spider-Man project, illustrated by Tokitokoro, follows a high school student named Haruto Hachidori who gains spider-like abilities while navigating the urban landscape of Shibuya. Meanwhile, Ryūsei Yamada is helming the Spider-Gwen adaptation, which reimagines Gwen Stacy as a drummer for the band "Mary Janes" who must balance her newfound superhuman responsibilities with the challenges of daily life.
While the official Japanese titles for these projects remain unconfirmed, Kadokawa has clarified that the broader collaboration will encompass five distinct manga titles. These works are slated to begin their run on the KadoComi digital service before the end of the year. Beyond the web-slinging duo, the publisher also teased character designs for Daredevil and The Punisher, signaling a wider scope for the partnership.
This announcement follows a significant shift in the Japanese publishing landscape for Marvel properties. As of September 30, Shueisha has concluded its licensing agreement with Walt Disney Japan, leading to the removal of previous titles like Deadpool: Samurai and Spider-Man: Octo-Girl from digital and physical storefronts. With Marvel’s internal restructuring—including C.B. Cebulski’s move to lead "Asia Originals"—this new Kadokawa venture represents the next chapter for Marvel-themed manga in the region.
