The historical crime drama Manshuu Ahen Squad (Manchuria Opium Squad) is officially headed to the screen. Kodansha launched an official website for the project this week, confirming that the manga—which explores the dark underbelly of 1930s Manchukuo—will receive an anime adaptation.
Originally launched by Tsukasa Monma and Shikako in 2020, the series has navigated a complex production history. Following the passing of original illustrator Shikako in 2025, the manga resumed serialization this past October with Tsurushima taking over art duties. The story follows Isamu Higata, a soldier stationed in the Japanese-controlled puppet state who turns to the illicit opium trade to support his family, spiraling into a dangerous criminal underworld.
Beyond its narrative reach, the series has seen significant commercial success, boasting over 3 million copies in circulation as of late 2025. It has also garnered critical attention, earning nominations for both the 47th Kodansha Manga Awards and the 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards. While the manga is available to English readers through Kodansha’s K Manga service, no production studio or release window for the anime has been announced yet.
Why it matters: The transition to a new illustrator following the series' hiatus suggests a strong commitment from the publisher to maintain the property's momentum. With the source material reaching its 22nd volume, it remains to be seen how much of the sprawling historical narrative the initial season will cover.
