The sci-fi action series Eat-Man is returning to the screen with a new adaptation titled Eat-Man: The Over Order. Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures launched an official website for the project this week, unveiling a teaser visual and an announcement trailer that confirms the return of Masashi Ebara to the lead role of the metal-consuming adventurer, Bolt Crank.
Production is currently underway at Studio Cab, with Shunji Ooga, known for his work on Golgo 13, serving as director. Notably, original manga creator Akihito Yoshitomi is deeply involved in the production, credited with both the original design and script. Satoshi Hirayama, whose credits include Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman, is attached as the character designer.
This announcement follows a long hiatus for the animated franchise, which last aired in 1998. The original manga, which ran in Dengeki Comic Gao! from 1996 to 2003, was previously adapted into two 12-episode seasons by Studio Deen. The series later expanded with the sequel manga Eat-Man: The Main Dish, which concluded in 2019.
Why it matters: The involvement of Masashi Ebara provides a direct link to the 90s television series, though the studio shift from Studio Deen to Studio Cab suggests a potential change in visual identity for the franchise. With the staff and cast now public, the production has yet to confirm a premiere window or the total episode count.
