Kyō Yoneshiro, the creator behind titles like Ōjōgiwa no Imi o Shire!, is set to tackle a literary classic. The latest issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits revealed that Yoneshiro will debut a new series titled Netsuzō: Chijin no Ai (Fabrication: A Fool's Love) in the magazine’s next issue, arriving August 3.
The manga serves as a contemporary adaptation of Junichirō Tanizaki’s seminal 1924 novel, Chijin no Ai, widely known in English as Naomi. The original story centers on Joji Kawai, a salaryman who becomes captivated by a young waitress named Naomi. Their relationship takes a complex turn when Joji attempts to mold Naomi into his ideal woman through education and refinement, only to find the reality of her transformation far removed from his expectations.
Tanizaki’s source material remains a pillar of Japanese literature, having inspired multiple film adaptations over the last century, most recently in 2024. Yoneshiro’s involvement adds a new layer to this legacy, following her recent work on the one-shot The 11th hour, which reached international readers via Shueisha's MANGA Plus service last year. With her track record for exploring intense interpersonal dynamics, this adaptation of Tanizaki’s psychological drama appears to be a natural fit for her storytelling sensibilities.
