The descent into the depths continues with the upcoming release of Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening Mystery). The first chapter of the new film trilogy has confirmed an October 23 theatrical debut, accompanied by a fresh trailer that offers a glimpse into the next stage of Riko and Reg’s journey. The promotional video also highlights the film's theme song, 'Chain of the Abyss,' a collaboration between series composer Kevin Penkin and VTuber Mori Calliope.
Alongside the footage, the production team announced two new cast additions: Sumire Morohoshi will join the ensemble as Tepaste, while Takanori Hoshino is set to voice Cravagli. They will be working alongside returning leads Mariya Ise (Reg), Miyu Tomita (Riko), Shiori Izawa (Nanachi), and Misaki Kuno (Faputa).
Behind the scenes, the creative engine remains consistent with the series' previous high-stakes installments. Director Masayuki Kojima is back at the helm at studio Kinema Citrus, working from scripts by Hideyuki Kurata. Given the franchise's reputation for blending whimsical exploration with intense, often brutal stakes, the return of this core staff—including character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda—signals a commitment to the aesthetic and tone that have defined the series since its 2017 debut.
This trilogy serves as the direct continuation of the narrative established in Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. As the series moves from its television roots into this cinematic format, it continues to adapt Akihito Tsukushi’s acclaimed manga, which remains a cornerstone of the seinen adventure genre. With the franchise having previously seen success with theatrical releases like Dawn of the Deep Soul, this new project is poised to further expand the lore of the Abyss.
