The live-action film adaptation of Yuuto Suzuki's popular manga Sakamoto Days has debuted at the #4 spot at the Japanese box office. The film sold 346,000 tickets and earned 478 million yen (approximately US$3.05 million) during its initial three-day run. Spanning the entirety of Japan's Golden Week holidays, the film has accumulated 1.14 million ticket sales and 1.5 billion yen (about US$9.58 million) in its first eight days.
Directed and written by YΕ«ichi Fukuda, known for his work on live-action adaptations like Gintama and Under Ninja, the film brings the story of a legendary former assassin living a quiet family life to the big screen. Ren Meguro of Snow Man stars as Taro Sakamoto, with Fumiya Takahashi as Shin Asakura. The cast also includes Aya Ueto as Taro Sakamoto's wife Aoi, and Miyu Yoshimoto as their daughter Hana.
Action direction was handled by Keiya Tabuchi, who previously worked on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time and the live-action Attack on Titan. The film is produced by CREDEUS in collaboration with Avex Pictures. In addition to standard screenings, Sakamoto Days is also available in the immersive ScreenX format across 27 theaters nationwide.
The Sakamoto Days manga is published digitally in English by MANGA Plus and Viz Media, with Viz also handling its print release. The story follows Taro Sakamoto, a feared assassin who retired after falling in love, gaining weight, and now runs a neighborhood store, all while trying to protect his family from his past.
