North American audiences will soon have the chance to experience the live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters per Second, as distributor GKIDS announced a theatrical release set for October 23. The film, which originally premiered in Japan in October 2025, brings Makoto Shinkai’s poignant story of long-distance longing to the big screen with a new perspective.
The production stars Hokuto Matsumura, known for his voice role as Sōta in Suzume, in the lead role of Takaki. Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama with a screenplay by Ayako Suzuki, the film captures the three interconnected tales of the original anime. The project also features a notable musical contribution, with Kenshi Yonezu performing the theme song, "1991."
While the 2007 original anime remains a cornerstone of Shinkai's filmography—often cited for its atmospheric visuals and emotional resonance—this live-action iteration offers a distinct stylistic departure. The film saw solid performance during its Japanese debut, selling 278,000 tickets in its opening weekend. GKIDS has confirmed that information regarding a home video release will follow later this year, providing a secondary window for those unable to catch the limited theatrical run.
