DMM Pictures has confirmed that the romantic comedy manga Kusunoki's Flunking Her High School Glow-Up (Kusunoki-san wa Kōkō Debut ni Shippai Shite Iru) is officially receiving a television anime adaptation. The series, which began its run on the comic POOL service in 2022, follows two high schoolers who successfully reinvented their appearances but struggle to shed their past identities as middle school outcasts.
The production features a notable creative team, with Midori Yui—known for work on Carole & Tuesday—stepping into the director's chair. The animation will be a collaborative effort between studios Passione and Hayabusa Film, with Koji Haneda handling character designs and Hyadain composing the score. Suzune Ishikawa is attached as the project's animation producer.
The voice cast will feature Tomori Kusunoki as the socially awkward Shizuka Kusunoki alongside Yūto Uemura as the pretty-girl-phobic Keisuke Shizuki. The story centers on their attempts to maintain their new, popular personas while hiding their shared history of being social pariahs.
Kodansha USA currently handles the English release of the manga, which continues to grow in popularity ahead of the eighth Japanese volume release on July 28. With the series gaining traction, this adaptation aims to capture the comedic tension of Shizuka and Keisuke’s high school debut.
