The studio Visual Arts/Key announced Monday that the prominent writer and composer Jun Maeda has received a diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer. Following an assessment of his medical prognosis, Maeda has chosen to pursue palliative care. Although he is presently hospitalized, the studio stated that he intends to continue his creative output as his health permits. Maeda is a foundational figure at Key, having authored and composed for iconic visual novels such as Kanon, Air, and Clannad. His narrative work is frequently associated with the "nakige" genre, which focuses on emotional themes of tragedy and human connection. Regarding his recent contributions to the game Heaven Burns Red, the studio confirmed that the major story segments and musical compositions for the initial six chapters are complete. Beyond this, Maeda is working to finalize a series of songs for a YouTube project, which the studio plans to release sequentially. The staff has established a mailing address for fans to send letters of encouragement, though they have explicitly asked that no gifts or get-well items be sent.
