Kakao Entertainment has confirmed plans to shutter Tapas, its North American webtoon platform. This decision signals a major pivot for the company, effectively ending its direct-to-consumer digital publishing strategy in the region five years after a significant investment of approximately 1.1 trillion won—roughly US$780 million—to acquire both Tapas and the webnovel platform Radish.

While the company is currently in the process of notifying publishers and rights holders regarding the shutdown, specific details concerning user refunds, content migration, and the handling of user data remain unconfirmed. The closure of Tapas follows the company's earlier decision to sunset Radish in 2025, a move that was originally intended to consolidate its North American story-based business under the Tapas brand.

This regional exit coincides with a broader restructuring of the company's digital footprint in South Korea. By the end of this year, Kakao Entertainment intends to merge its domestic platforms, Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon, into a single unified service. This consolidation aims to centralize approximately 16,000 original intellectual properties and streamline user data management.

Why it matters: The closure of Tapas leaves a significant gap in the North American digital comics market, particularly for creators and readers who relied on the platform for localized webtoon content. With the company's direct operations in the region now effectively ending, it remains to be seen how Kakao will manage its existing IP portfolio for international audiences moving forward.
