Horror master Junji Ito is seeing another one of his chilling tales brought to life, as Toei and Thai production company 13 Studio have announced a feature-length film adaptation of the short story The Hanging Balloons (Kubitsuri Kikyū). The project will be helmed by director Taweewat Wantha, known for his work on Death Whisperer 2 and Tha Rae: The Exorcist.

While the film will transplant the story's setting to Thailand, the production team aims to maintain the unsettling atmosphere that defined the 1994 original. The story, which Viz Media released in English as "Hanging Blimp" within the Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories collection, centers on a terrifying phenomenon where giant balloons bearing the faces of destined victims appear in the sky following a celebrity's suicide.

This announcement arrives during a busy period for Ito adaptations. Toei is also currently collaborating with M Studio and Showbox on a live-action version of The Long Hair in the Attic, with director Sitisiri Mongkolsiri attached to the project. These efforts follow a string of recent high-profile releases, including the 2024 Uzumaki anime mini-series and the 2023 Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre anthology.

Given the shift in setting to Thailand, how do you think the local cultural context will influence the visual execution of Ito's signature horror style?
