The yuri light novel Homunculus Tears: Alchemy for the Brokenhearted is officially moving forward with a new manga adaptation. Publisher Dokico confirmed that artist Ayster will helm the project, with a simultaneous launch planned for January 2027 across English, German, and Japanese editions.
This announcement serves as a revival for the adaptation, which had previously stalled after an earlier attempt involving Nata Ōkura and Kadokawa was canceled. Author Inori shared that the project has been fully restructured, expressing confidence that Ayster’s artistic style is well-suited to the story’s themes of existential despair and connection. The narrative centers on Maha, a human alchemist fighting in a war against demons who faces a crisis of identity when her mother invents a homunculus to replace human soldiers on the battlefield.
Inori remains a prominent voice in the genre, best known for the I'm in Love with the Villainess franchise, which has spawned a long-running manga, a 2023 anime series, and recent sequel novels. Dokico is also expanding its catalog through its Yurico project, which includes another collaboration with Inori titled Poison for the Moon, Medicine for the Night.
With the manga now back on the production schedule, the focus shifts to how Ayster will interpret the relationship between Maha and Ruri. Given the history of the project, does the change in creative team and publisher suggest a shift in the tone of the adaptation?
