Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO, a prequel film set before the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM, has been confirmed for a theatrical release. The announcement came from Bandai Namco Filmworks producer Naohiro Ogata during the "Gundam Conference Spring 2026" livestream.

The prequel's scenario was penned by Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita during the planning stages of Gundam Seed FREEDOM. Director Mitsuo Fukuda revealed that the script for FREEDOM ZERO was completed two decades ago, with storyboards also predating those of the main film and being nearly halfway done. Dialogue recording has also concluded.

Originally conceived as an original video anime (OVA), the staff has yet to decide on the final presentation format for Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO. The first teaser for the prequel debuted in November 2024 during special screenings of Gundam Seed FREEDOM in Japanese theaters.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM itself premiered in Japan in January 2024, achieving the franchise's highest three-day opening and becoming the highest-earning Gundam film in the country. The film was also screened in the United States and Canada by Fathom Events and is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
