The upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO anime has officially locked in an April 2027 release window for both North American and Japanese audiences. The production, which utilizes the term "hōsō" on its Japanese portal, is poised for a television broadcast as part of the ambitious RG Project—a new initiative designed to expand the franchise into an entirely original universe.
Director Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is helming the project at Sola Animation. He is joined by collaborator Toh Enjoe, who is handling the series' science fiction world-building. The production team also features character designer Miyako Takasu, who is adapting original drafts by STATO, and composer Gō Shiina, whose credits include the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba score. The lead role of Ray Azumi, a war orphan and pilot of the Gundam Zero, will be voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka.
This series serves as a cornerstone for the RG Project, which also encompasses the Gundam Rogue Orbit game. While the game is slated for a March 2027 debut, its narrative takes place 90 years after the events of the XARX-ZERO anime. With Kamiyama previously hinting at additional, unannounced components of the RG Project, it remains to be seen how the franchise will further integrate these disparate multimedia entries.
Why it matters: The simultaneous release strategy across North America and Japan suggests a high-priority push for this new universe, though the exact broadcast platforms for the anime have yet to be confirmed.
