Yoshiyuki Tomino, the legendary creator of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, and acclaimed shōjo manga artist Machiko Satonaka have been recognized by the Japanese government with induction into the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon class. The announcement was part of the Spring 2026 Conferment of Decorations, which lists 3,875 recipients.
Tomino, who debuted at Mushi Production and directed the original Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, has helmed numerous iconic mecha anime, including Space Runaway Ideon, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Turn A Gundam. This latest honor follows previous recognitions such as being named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2021 and receiving the Tokyo Anime Award Festival's Achievement Award in 2020.
Satonaka, who made her manga debut in 1964, is celebrated for her impactful shōjo works featuring strong female leads, such as Lady Ann and Karyūdo no Seiza. Her contributions extend beyond her art; she has held significant academic and leadership roles, including professorships and directorships within various artistic and cultural foundations. Satonaka was also honored as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2023.
The official presentation ceremony for the Order of the Rising Sun is scheduled to take place on May 12.
