Viz Media has entered a strategic partnership with the production powerhouse The Gotham Group to develop live-action and animated adaptations of its diverse catalog. The agreement encompasses both the publisher's Viz Originals graphic novel line and the high-profile RWBY franchise, which Viz acquired following the closure of Rooster Teeth in 2024.
This move signals a major expansion for the Viz Originals imprint, which features titles such as Devil's Candy by Rem & Bikkuri, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, Lynx by Sam Sattin, and Acky Bright's Galaxic Baseball League. By leveraging the expertise of The Gotham Group—known for their work on The Maze Runner and Percy Jackson and the Olympians—Viz aims to translate these print properties into film and television projects.
For RWBY fans, the announcement provides a clearer roadmap for the future of the series. Beyond the confirmation of a 10th volume, the partnership with Gotham Group suggests that the franchise, which spans nine volumes and 117 episodes, is being positioned for broader screen development. Since securing the rights, Viz Media has been vocal about exploring new chapters for the series, which previously saw a Japanese anime adaptation with RWBY: Ice Queendom.
The collaboration arrives as the media landscape continues to shift, with Warner Bros. Discovery offloading the RWBY and gen:LOCK IPs following the shutdown of Rooster Teeth. With a deep history of manga adaptations for the RWBY brand, including works by Shirow Miwa and Bunta Kinami, Viz Media is now poised to integrate these properties into a more expansive production ecosystem.
