The original anime Goodbye, Lara (Sayonara Lara) is set to expand its reach beyond the screen. The series' official social media channels confirmed on Tuesday that a manga adaptation is currently in production. The project will be illustrated by Saburouta, known for the popular series Citrus, and is slated to begin serialization this October on Kadokawa’s digital manga platform, KadoComi.
Directed by Takushi Koide at Kinema Citrus, the anime reimagines the classic Little Mermaid myth within a contemporary Japanese setting. The story follows Lara, a mermaid princess who, after failing to find true love centuries ago, is reborn in modern-day Lake Biwa. The production features series composition by Anna Kawahara, character designs by Shiori Tani, and a score by Yuma Yamaguchi.
Currently, the anime is available to international audiences via Crunchyroll, which offers both the subtitled version and an English dub. The series premiered in Japan on July 5 across Tokyo MX, BS Asahi, and YTV. Given the involvement of Saburouta, a creator with a strong track record in character-driven narratives, the manga adaptation offers a fresh perspective on the series' core themes of reincarnation and modern assimilation.
