In a unique cross-industry collaboration, the Pokémon franchise has partnered with the canned meat brand Spam to release a special gift set in South Korea. The announcement, made on September 11, coincides with the upcoming Chuseok harvest festival, a major holiday in the region running from September 24 to September 26.
The themed gift sets are currently listed for 63,700 won, or roughly US$47.40. Consumers can purchase the items through the KakaoTalk Gift platform and the CJ The Market online store. While Spam occupies a different cultural niche in North America, it remains a highly regarded gift item in South Korea, often serving as a staple component in traditional holiday gift sets.
This partnership is managed through CJ CheilJedang, which distributes the product in South Korea under license from Hormel Foods. The cultural significance of Spam in the region dates back to the early 1950s, eventually evolving into a popular gift choice during the 1990s as a practical alternative to more traditional offerings like fruit or beef sets.
