The production team for the upcoming anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tales of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court (Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den) has bolstered its cast with three industry veterans. The series, which explores the complex political and magical dynamics of the Kingdom of Ei’s inner court, will feature Kotono Mitsuishi as Kimi Reiga, Aya Hisakawa as Ran Hourin, and Takako Honda as Gen Gousetsu.

These additions join a production led by director Mitsue Yamazaki, known for her work on Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, with series composition by Yoshiko Nakamura. The visual identity of the show is being handled by character designer Ai Kikuchi, while Yukari Hashimoto provides the musical score. The project is currently in development at Doga Kobo, a studio well-regarded for its high-quality character animation.

Based on Satsuki Nakamura’s original light novel series, which launched on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in 2020, the story centers on the stark contrast between the virtuous, sickly Reirin Kou and the boorish Keigetsu Shu. The narrative hinges on a body-swapping premise that elevates the typical 'villainess' subgenre through its focus on royal intrigue and historical fantasy elements.

Fans looking to catch up on the source material ahead of the Summer 2026 broadcast can turn to the light novel and manga adaptations, both of which are published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. With the 13th volume of the light novel arriving in late September, the franchise continues to expand its footprint ahead of its television debut.
