The production team for the Fungus and Iron (Kin to Tetsu) anime has expanded, with the official website confirming Keitarō Motonaga as the series director. Motonaga, whose portfolio includes Date A Live and Getbackers, will lead the project at Yokohama Animation Lab. The announcement was paired with the debut of a new teaser visual, offering a fresh look at the adaptation of Ayaka Katayama’s manga.
This development comes as the source material approaches its conclusion. After launching in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2021 and navigating a brief hiatus for the author's maternity leave, the story is set to finish its run on September 9. Kodansha plans to release the 10th and final compiled volume shortly after on October 8, while Kodansha USA Publishing continues to handle the digital English release.
With the director and studio now locked in, the production moves into a more visible phase. However, the project's voice cast and release schedule remain undisclosed. Since the manga is reaching its final chapter, the studio has the advantage of a complete narrative roadmap to guide the adaptation. Given the series' unique premise involving the protagonist Dante and his encounter with Aoi, it remains to be seen how the team will pace the transition from page to screen.
