Fantagraphics has provided a fresh look at the English-language edition of Wandering Cat's Cage (Mandarin Gypsy Cat no Rōjō), the dystopian series by acclaimed creator Akane Torikai. The title is being released under the publisher's new Takumigraphics imprint, which focuses on East Asian comics, in collaboration with MSX: Mangasplaining Extra. While the volume was previously scheduled for a spring release, it is now set to hit shelves on October 27.
Set in a near-future society where reproduction is strictly monitored and male births are rare, the story follows Sanada, an acupuncturist living in a shantytown outside a controlled, opulent city. Her life is upended when Reiho, a man she has been sheltering, is abducted by the city's breeding program, forcing her to lead a rescue mission that challenges the status quo. The English edition features translation by Jocelyne Allen and lettering by Sarah Linsley.
Akane Torikai is well-known for her provocative explorations of social dynamics and gender roles. Her bibliography includes the long-running Sensei no Shiroi Uso (Teacher's White Lie), which was previously released in English by Kodansha USA, and the recently concluded Saturn Return. With Wandering Cat's Cage originally spanning two volumes during its 2017–2018 run in Da Vinci magazine, this new release offers a compact entry point into Torikai's darker, speculative work for English readers.
