Studio Ponoc, the studio founded by former Ghibli producers, has released its anthology film Modest Heroes on Netflix. The collection features three distinct animated shorts, each exploring themes of bravery and heroism through unique lenses. Originally planned with a fourth segment from the late Isao Takahata, the film ultimately comprises three self-contained stories.
The shorts include "Kanini & Kanino," about two crab siblings navigating a dangerous world; "Samurai Egg," following a father's struggle with an egg allergy to protect his son; and "Invisible Man," about a man who can turn invisible. The anthology weaves together elements of fantasy, drama, and adventure, showcasing Ponoc's signature visual flair and emotional storytelling.
While the film was initially envisioned to be larger, the three completed segments offer a compelling, albeit brief, showcase of the studio's talent. Its release on Netflix provides an accessible platform for audiences to experience these award-winning narratives.
