Toei Animation is bringing the first 194 chapters of Akira Toriyama's seminal Dragon Ball manga to the screen once again. This new series will adapt the earliest adventures of Goku, from his childhood encounters with Bulma and the search for the Dragon Balls to his early martial arts tournaments.
This adaptation covers the entirety of the original Dragon Ball story, predating the events of Dragon Ball Z, which focused on Goku's adult life and his Saiyan heritage. Fans can expect a return to the more comedic and adventurous roots of the franchise, emphasizing martial arts training and exploration before the universe-altering battles of its successor.
The original Dragon Ball anime, also produced by Toei Animation, aired for 153 episodes from 1986 to 1988 and holds a MAL score of 7.98. This new iteration offers a chance to experience Toriyama's foundational work with modern sensibilities.
