The Dragon Ball franchise is returning to television with Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a project described as a complete reconstruction of the original Dragon Ball Super narrative. Featuring newly redrawn scenes and updated cuts, the series is slated to debut on October 11 at 11:15 p.m. via Fuji TV's nationwide broadcast network. Toei Animation is handling production, bringing in a veteran staff including chief animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro, known for his work on Super Dragon Ball Heroes, and composer Norihito Sumitomo, who returns to the franchise after scoring the original Dragon Ball Super.
A newly released "Super Surge" promotional video offers a first look at the updated animation style while previewing the series' musical lineup. The opening theme, "ONOGAMI," is performed by singer-songwriter Megatera Zero, while the ending theme, "Kan Peki No Peki," is provided by Vickeblanka. The production team also includes series composition lead Matsuto Seya, editor Eiichi Nishimura, and director of photography Yousuke Motoki.
This project follows a long history of expansion for the series, which began with the 131-episode Dragon Ball Super run from 2015 to 2018. The franchise has since seen significant theatrical success with Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the latter of which earned over $92 million globally. Most recently, the side-story anime Dragon Ball Daima concluded its 20-episode run earlier this year.
Why it matters: By positioning this as a "complete reconstruction" rather than a standard sequel, the studio is signaling a shift in how the Dragon Ball Super arc is presented to viewers. It remains to be seen how much of the original 131-episode narrative will be condensed or altered in this new format.
