The live-action The Legend of Zelda film has rounded out its ensemble cast with several notable additions. Reports indicate that the late Sam Neill, who completed his filming prior to his passing in July, has joined the project. He is joined by Dichen Lachman, who will portray the iconic Impa, and Yvonne Strahovski, cast as a queen character. Additionally, Uli Latukefu has been tapped to take on the role of the series' primary antagonist, Ganondorf.
These actors join leads Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who are set to star as Princess Zelda and Link, respectively. The production is helmed by director Wes Ball, with a script penned by Derek Connolly. The film is a significant collaborative effort, with Nintendo financing over half of the production costs alongside co-financier Sony, which will also handle distribution duties.
In tandem with the casting updates, the film’s release schedule has been adjusted. The production is now slated to arrive in theaters on April 30, 2027, moving up one week from its previously stated May 7 date. This latest shift follows a long development road for the project, which has been subject to various rumors and industry speculation dating back to early reports of a potential television adaptation nearly a decade ago.
This cinematic venture follows the massive global success of the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie. As Nintendo continues to expand its footprint in film, the project remains under the close supervision of franchise co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who serves as a producer alongside Avi Arad. The film arrives on the heels of major recent entries in the gaming franchise, including the 2024 release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and the record-breaking 2023 title The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
