Cygames has officially acquired Griot Groove, a studio specializing in 3DCG animation and visual effects. The move, announced Friday on Cygames' Japanese website, signifies the company's intent to bolster its video production capabilities and overall quality.
Griot Groove, established in 1996, has a notable portfolio including work on Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS, Chainsaw Man, and Tokyo Ghoul. The studio's expertise spans CG animation and motion capture across games, films, commercials, and anime. In 2023, Griot Groove also launched Black Relic, an AI production company with operations in Japan and Spain.
This acquisition follows a period of significant organizational changes for Cygames' subsidiaries. Cygames Pictures, formerly a subsidiary of Cygames, became a consolidated subsidiary of CyberAgent on February 27. It was subsequently renamed Cypic on April 6, coinciding with its 10th anniversary on April 5.
Cygames has also been actively investing in AI technology, establishing its Cygames AI Studio in December to research and develop AI tools for game creators. While this studio is focused on providing secure AI access and exploring creative potential, Cygames has stated that generative AI art is not currently used in its products and will not be implemented without prior notice.
