Crunchyroll has launched its English dub for the original anime Goodbye, Lara (Sayonara Lara), which premiered alongside the series' Japanese broadcast on July 5. The production, handled by VSI Los Angeles, introduces Brianna Knickerbocker in the lead role of Lara, supported by Anairis Quiñones as Mari and Tiana Camacho as Grace.
The series, directed by Takushi Koide at Kinema Citrus, offers a unique spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic The Little Mermaid. The narrative follows a mermaid who, after dying due to a forbidden wish for human love, is reincarnated 200 years later in modern-day Japan. The story unfolds at Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture, a personal touch from Koide who chose his own hometown as the backdrop for the protagonist's adjustment to the human world.
Behind the scenes, the dub is helmed by director and casting lead Gavin Harrison, with Gavin Cooper serving as the script adapter. The original Japanese production features series composition by Anna Kawahara, character designs by Shiori Tani, and a score composed by Yuma Yamaguchi. The series is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll as new episodes air in Japan.
