Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu continues to defy expectations, maintaining its top position at the Japanese box office for an eighth consecutive weekend. The adaptation of Nagano’s popular manga series pulled in an additional 427 million yen over the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to a staggering 14.6 billion yen. With this performance, the film has officially surpassed the earnings of Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway to become the highest-grossing film in Japan for 2026, currently sitting at 23rd on the all-time domestic box office list.

New entries also made their mark this weekend, led by the live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga Look Back. Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the film opened at #5, earning approximately 144 million yen in its first three days. Meanwhile, the second half of the Sound! Euphonium finale project, Sound! Euphonium, The Final Movie Part 2, entered the charts at #7, securing 147 million yen during its opening frame.

Elsewhere on the charts, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise saw its latest entry, Walpurgisnacht: Rising, slip to #4 in its third weekend. The film, which reunites the original creative team including chief director Akiyuki Simbo and studio SHAFT, has now earned over 1.8 billion yen. As the summer season winds down, several long-running titles, including the 33rd Crayon Shin-chan film and the Kingdom live-action sequel, have exited the top 10 rankings.
