The television adaptation of Nyan Nyan Factory’s Chainsmoker Cat (Yanineko) has expanded its cast, with Yumi Hara confirmed to voice Shizue Satō, the mother of the series' protagonist, Yani Neko. Viewers can expect the character to make her debut in the show’s seventh episode, which airs this Thursday.
Directed by Taku Kimura at Bibury Animation Studio, the series follows the misadventures of Yani, a catgirl whose life is defined by a chaotic apartment and an inability to kick her heavy smoking habit. The production features scripts by Takashi Aoshima and music by Keiichi Suzuki, leaning into the source material's brand of gross-out comedy and adult-oriented humor.
Since its July premiere, the show has maintained a unique distribution strategy, offering two distinct versions for viewers. While the "On-Air" version is tailored for standard terrestrial broadcast, the "Evil Dragon Unleashed" version—intended to capture the director’s original vision—is available through platforms like OceanVeil for international audiences and various premium services within Japan.
The original manga, serialized in Kodansha's Young Magazine, continues to be a staple of the seinen comedy genre. With 13 volumes currently released in Japan and an English-language version published by Seven Seas, the anime adaptation brings the franchise's irreverent tone to the screen for a summer 2026 run.
