Bandai Spirits has announced a massive new DX Chogokin transforming toy of the iconic SDF-1 Macross space fortress, celebrating the 45th anniversary of the beloved science-fiction romance franchise. A nearly two-minute promotional video showcases the toy in both its fortress and 'storm attacker' configurations, highlighting features like internal color-changing city lights and a recreation of the in-story Daedalus Attack maneuver. The video also includes a brief segment with Kazutaka Miyatake, the original mechanical designer who conceived the SDF-1's look.
The finalized DX Chogokin SDF-1 Macross toy measures approximately 650 millimeters (26 inches) long in fortress mode and over 700 millimeters (28 inches) tall in 'storm attacker' mode, including its display stand. This new release significantly surpasses the scale of the 1980s Takatoku Toys transforming SDF-1, being 1.5 times longer, wider, and taller, resulting in over three times the cubic volume.
Bandai Spirits first previewed a prototype of this extensive toy at Tamashii Nations 2022, which measured over 60 centimeters (24 inches) long at a 1/2,000-scale. The new DX Chogokin toy is scheduled to launch in November 2026 with a price tag of 99,000 yen (approximately $620 USD). Pre-orders are set to open on June 1.
