The 79th Cannes International Film Festival will host a special "Tokyo International Film Festival's Goes to Cannes" showcase, presenting five Japanese works-in-progress on May 15. Among the selected films are the live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga Look Back, helmed by director Hirokazu Kore-eda, and the anime film based on Kaori Mado's novel, currently titled You, Fireworks, and Our Promise.

Kore-eda, acclaimed for films like Shoplifters, is directing and editing the Look Back adaptation, with Yūta Bandō composing the score. GKIDS has secured U.S., Canadian, U.K., and Irish distribution rights for the film, which is slated for a 2026 Japanese theatrical release.

The anime film You, Fireworks, and Our Promise, a coming-of-age romance from directors Kei Suzuki at Synergy SP and The Answer Studio, is set against the backdrop of the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Show. The story follows high school students Makoto and Aki, whose lives become intertwined through a mysterious firework drawing, leading them toward a pivotal decision.

As Japan is the 2026 Country of Honor at the Marché du Film, the festival will also feature animation-focused workshops and panels. The "Goes to Cannes" initiative is organized by the Marché du Film marketplace to highlight international projects in development.
