The Chinese streaming giant Bilibili has introduced a revamped global version of its Android application, marking a significant shift in accessibility for international users. As of August 19, the platform no longer mandates identity verification for posting content from abroad, a hurdle that previously limited engagement for non-Chinese users. The updated interface currently integrates a blend of domestic Chinese programming and international content, with the company confirming that iOS and further regional rollouts are currently in development.
While Bilibili remains a dominant force in the Chinese market for Japanese animation—often outpacing competitors like Tencent Video and iQIYI—its international footprint has been bolstered by strategic partnerships. The company has previously collaborated with major industry players, including a 2019 licensing agreement with Funimation and a significant 2020 investment from Sony Corporation of America, which acquired a 4.98% stake in the platform.
Beyond its role as a distributor, the company has increasingly moved into the production space. This includes the 2021 acquisition of Haoliners Cultures Media, the parent company of Emon Animation, and direct production investments such as the 2025 project To Be Hero X. With the platform now streamlining its global access, it remains to be seen how this shift will affect the distribution strategy for its future co-productions and user-generated library.
