Manga creator Atsushi Kaneko is set to begin his latest project, MISH/MASH, in the upcoming issue of Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine. The series is scheduled to debut on September 28, following an announcement in the magazine's combined 42nd and 43rd issue released this week. The publisher has teased the premise with a focus on the modern struggle for truth, asking readers what they choose to believe in an era defined by social media, artificial intelligence, and the proliferation of fake news.
This new launch follows the conclusion of Kaneko's previous work, EVOL, which wrapped up its ten-volume run in November 2025. Kaneko has built a distinct reputation for his gritty, stylized storytelling, with previous titles like SOIL and Wet Moon earning critical recognition, including nominations for Best Crime Comic at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. His work has also seen international reach, with Search and Destroy—a reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's Dororo—receiving honors from the American Library Association's Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table earlier this year.
Why it matters: Kaneko’s shift toward themes of AI and digital misinformation suggests a thematic evolution from his earlier, more traditional crime and thriller narratives. Whether this series will adopt the same experimental visual style seen in his previous works remains to be seen as the premiere date approaches.
