A new crowdfunding campaign has launched for Tenchi Galaxy, an ambitious project designed to act as a spiritual successor to the beloved Tenchi Universe television series. Armiger Entertainment is looking to raise $400,000 to produce a 30-minute pilot episode, which they hope will serve as the foundation for a full-scale series revival. As of now, the campaign has already secured over $220,000 from more than 1,200 backers.
The project reunites key creative talent from the franchise's history, most notably director Hiroshi Negishi, who previously helmed Tenchi Universe and several of the franchise's feature films. The pilot is set to feature the return of the classic English voice cast, including Petrea Burchard as Ryoko and Matt K. Miller as Tenchi, with the addition of VTuber Nerissa Ravencroft in the role of the space pirate Rise. Series creator Masaki Kajishima has reportedly given his blessing to the production.
Backers have several tiers to choose from, ranging from standard digital downloads to a special edition SteelBook release. The campaign includes several stretch goals that unlock once funding milestones are met, such as a Japanese language audio track at $450,000, a 4K remaster of the pilot at $475,000, and a behind-the-scenes documentary at $500,000.
While the Tenchi Muyo! franchise has seen various iterations over the decades—including the long-running Ryo Ohki OVA series and the recent GXP Paradise Starting—this pilot aims to capture the specific tone of the Tenchi Universe era. With AIC president Tōru Miura serving as executive producer, the team is positioning this as a strategic effort to secure a future for the franchise in a modern market.
