Amazon Prime Video is expanding the reach of The Apothecary Diaries with a newly announced live-action series adaptation. The project, which is slated for a worldwide release in 2028, will feature actress Mana Ashida in the central role of the clever and observant apothecary, Maomao. The production is a collaborative effort between Amazon Content Services and TOHO.
This live-action project joins an already expansive franchise footprint. The source material, authored by Hyuganatsu with illustrations by Touko Shino, has seen significant growth since its initial web serialization in 2011. Beyond the print novels and the long-running manga adaptation, the series has maintained a consistent presence in the anime space, with the third season of the television series currently scheduled to begin its broadcast run this October.
For those following the franchise's animated entries, the series has seen strong engagement across platforms. The anime's second season, which concluded its two-cour run earlier this year, remains a staple on Crunchyroll alongside the first season. With an original film, The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure, also arriving in theaters this December, the 2028 live-action series marks a long-term commitment to the property's expansion.
