Animation powerhouses Sunrise and SHAFT have officially announced their first-ever collaborative anime project. The studios launched a dedicated X (formerly Twitter) account, "Sunrise x Shaft New Anime," on Thursday, initiating a countdown to the project's full reveal on June 23 at 24:30 JST (effectively June 24 at 12:30 a.m.).
The new account has begun posting daily countdown updates. The initial teaser video offered a glimpse into the anime's visual direction through the use of "color scripts," hinting at the unique aesthetic that may emerge from this partnership. This collaboration brings together two studios with distinct and celebrated legacies in the anime industry.
Sunrise, a subsidiary of Bandai Namco Filmworks, is renowned for its extensive work on the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, alongside other popular series like Code Geass and Love Live!. The studio is also celebrating its 50th anniversary with a project that includes original short films.
SHAFT, established in 1975, is particularly celebrated for its distinctive visual style, often associated with director Akiyuki Shinbo. Their notable works include the critically acclaimed Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series, as well as March comes in like a lion.
