A planned animated film adaptation is in the works for Akiwashi's popular original music video, Living in a World Without Magic (also known as Mahoseka). The original music video, which Akiwashi self-produced as a graduation project, has amassed over 6.39 million views since its July 2022 debut on YouTube. Akiwashi handled multiple roles on the original project, including director, scriptwriter, character designer, animator, and compositor.
The film's narrative will explore a world where witches coexist discreetly with ordinary people. The story centers on a boy named Haru who encounters a one-eyed witch named Sara, leading him to uncover "the forgotten past of witches." The original music video, a drama with mystery and musical elements, has a MAL score of 7.24.
Significant international plans are already underway for the film project. The English-language site AnimeOshi is hosting a Mahoseka Film Club campaign to garner support for the film's release. Furthermore, Singapore-based venture studio Kasagi Labo is slated to present the project at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 24, with an industry panel that includes Masao Maruyama, co-founder of Madhouse and MAPPA. Kasagi Labo will also maintain a presence at Anime Expo next month.
