The classic sci-fi manga Eat-Man is making a return to the screen with a newly announced project, EAT-MAN The Over Order. Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures confirmed the production on Thursday, accompanying the announcement with a teaser video and visual that highlight the return of Masashi Ebara, who reprises his role as the enigmatic protagonist Bolt Crank.

Production is currently underway at Studio Cab with Shunji ลŒga, known for his work on Golgo 13 and various Soreike! Anpanman films, serving as director. In a move that should please long-time readers, original manga creator Akihito Yoshitomi is directly involved, overseeing the scripts and original designs. Satoshi Hirayama, whose credits include Lupin III vs. Detective Conan The Movie, is tasked with adapting those designs for animation.

This project serves as a revival for a franchise that first appeared in the late 90s. While the original manga ran from 1996 to 2002, the series saw a resurgence with the 2014 launch of Eat-Man The Main Dish. The franchise has maintained a steady presence for collectors and digital viewers alike, with both 1997 and 1998 anime adaptations currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.

Why it matters: The return of Masashi Ebara to the lead role provides a strong sense of continuity for a series that has been dormant for decades. With the original creator taking a hands-on role in the scriptwriting, the production appears focused on honoring the source material's established tone.
