British actor Michael Byrne, known for his role as an Elder in the 2009 live-action film Blood: The Last Vampire, has died at the age of 82. Byrne passed away on June 20.

Byrne maintained a prolific film career from 1963 until 2022, appearing in numerous high-profile productions. His notable film credits include playing Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows โ€“ Part 1, Horace Greeley in Gangs of New York, Christiaan Barnard in Diana, and Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Beyond his film work, Byrne also cultivated a substantial theater career. He joined the National Theatre in 1964 and continued to perform on stage, with a recent role in "Uncle Vanya" at the Theatre Royal in Bath in 2019. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
