The digital comic A Bona Fide Killer is experiencing a massive resurgence in popularity, with Kakao Entertainment reporting a tenfold increase in views on Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon. The surge in reader interest directly follows the July 31 premiere of the live-action television adaptation on MBC, comparing data from the week prior to the show's launch against the first full week of August.
The series follows the double life of Yu Bona, a mother who returns from maternity leave to resume her secret career as the legendary assassin known as "Kingfisher." The narrative tension escalates as her husband, a news reporter named Taesung, is assigned to investigate the very contract killer his wife has become. The adaptation has earned praise for its brisk pacing and high-stakes action sequences, bolstered by strategic promotional campaigns launched by Kakao to coincide with the show's debut.
Created by the duo GUM and YOON, the source material has been in serialization since 2022. Following the conclusion of its third season last September, the webtoon returned for its fourth season on July 27, just days before the live-action series hit screens. International viewers can currently stream the television adaptation on Viki, while the original webtoon is available in English via Tapas.
