The late-night atmosphere of Shinjuku's most mysterious eatery is set to return, as the sixth live-action season of Midnight Diner (Shinya Shokudō) officially confirmed an October 20 premiere. The series will air across MBS, TBS, and other Japanese networks, bringing back Kaoru Kobayashi to anchor the show as the enigmatic Master.
Production for this latest installment features a mix of veteran and fresh talent. Returning director Jōji Matsuoka is set to helm episodes 2, 5, and 8, joined by series regulars Nobuhiro Yamashita and Shōtarō Kobayashi. The production is also expanding its creative roster, with Satoko Yokohama and Ryō Yoshida joining as new directors for the season. The scriptwriting duties remain in the hands of a seasoned team, including Katsuhiko Manabe, Kōsuke Mukai, Kensaku Kojima, and Marina Ōshima.
Beyond the core production staff, the series is bringing back a deep bench of supporting cast members, including Joe Odagiri as Kogure and Yutaka Matsushige as Ryū. The ensemble cast also features the return of Toshiki Ayata, Tamae Ando, and Kimiko Yo, among many others who have defined the show's intimate, character-driven narrative style over the years.
While the franchise has seen significant international exposure through Netflix—which streamed the fourth and fifth seasons globally—the series remains firmly rooted in Yarō Abe’s original manga, which earned a Manga Taishō nomination in 2009. With the new season spanning ten episodes, it continues the legacy of a franchise that has already spawned two Japanese films and a 2019 Chinese adaptation. Given the long gap since the 2019 season, it remains to be seen if international streaming platforms will pick up this latest installment for a simultaneous release.
